Our Storytime Theme for the week of January 7th is Woodland Animals. Extend your storytime fun through the songs and activities listed on your storytime handout, including this great action activity at home. Travel though the river, climb a tree, walk through the field, and sneak into the cave. For extra fun, pack a lunch for the hunt, then create a cave in your living room with blankets to “find” the bear!
This is a great game to build listening and comprehension skills, as well as spatial relationships.
GOING ON A BEAR HUNT
Adapted from “The Complete Book of Activities, Games, Stories, Props, Recipes, and Dances for Young Children” by Pam Schiller and Jackie Silberg
We’re going on a bear hunt.
What to come along?
Well, come on then.
Let’s go!
(walk in place)
Look! there’s a river.
Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’ll have to go through it. (pretend to walk through the river)
(resume walking)
Look! There’s a tree.
Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’ll have to go over it. (pretend to climb up and over tree)
(resume walking)
Look! There’s a wheat field.
Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’ll have to go through it. (swish hands back and forth, pretending to go through the field)
(resume walking, adding more adventures if you like)
Look! There’s a cave.
Want to go inside?
Ooh, it’s dark in here! (look around squinting)
I see two eyes.
Wonder what it is. (reach hands to touch)
It’s soft and furry.
It’s big.
It’s a bear! Let’s run!
Through the field! (swish back through field)
Over the tree! (pretend to climb up and over tree)
Through the river! (wade through the river)
Whew! Home safely.
