SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Lawrence Register Payne Collection contains materials concerning Payne’s life and, in particular, a custody case involving his niece which took place in 1886.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Lawrence Register Payne (d. 1926) was born Rebecca Payne. At 33 years old, Rebecca began living as a man and married Annie Hinton. Payne and his sister Leila cared for the daughter of their late sister but were sued for custody by the girl’s father in 1886.  Payne and his sister won the case in Winchester Court.
