“Expect the Unexpected” Friends Used Book Sale Announced August 10-August 22 at Bowman Library

Handley Regional Library System and the Friends of the Handley Regional Library System are excited to announce the “Expect the Unexpected” Friends Used Book Sale running August 10-22 at Bowman Library.  This book sale has several new safety adjustments due to COVID-19.  Patrons will need to make an appointment to shop with a 1-hour time limit (following the library system’s adjusted public hours) by contacting Barbara Dickinson, Executive Director of the Friends of the Handley Regional Library System, at 540.662.9041 ext.

Emily Martin and Friends

The Friends of the Handley Regional Library System is pleased to bring the next Little Noon Music, Emily Martin and Friends, to Bowman Library. The performance is on March 13th at 12:15 and is free and open to the public. Based in the Washington DC region, Emily Martin, of The Martin Family Band, carries on the tradition of playing, teaching and performing. Her styles include Old Time Appalachian traditional music and Irish music on the mandolin, mountain dulcimer, tenor banjo and voice.

The next 1455 A Place for Writers Author Talk will be at Handley Library on March 7th at 3PM. Sponsored by the Friends of Handley Regional Library System, the program will feature authors Thorpe Moeckel and Jessie van Eerden. 1455’s Founding Director Sean Murphy and the authors will discuss the process of writing and the contemporary literary scene, followed by an open Q&A. Copies of their books will be available for sale by the Winchester Book Gallery.

Yoga

Yoga Series Launches at Handley Library

Introduction to Yoga, a free program series for adults, will begin at Handley Library starting January 21st at 6PM. This will be a monthly program on the third Tuesday of every month. The class is designed for anyone who has ever been curious about yoga, but has never known where to start. In a workshop style, participants will go over terms, breathing, and some gentle flow yoga. There will be props and modifications offered so that everyone can participate!

1455 A Place for Writers Author Series at Handley Regional Library System continues with author Nathan Leslie on January 18th at 3PM. Leslie will read from his award-winning series, Hurry Up and Relax. Leslie is the recipient of the 2019 Washington Writers Publishing House Fiction Award. Leslie’s nine previous books of fiction include Three Men, Root and Shoot, Sibs, and The Tall Tale of Tommy Twice. He is also the author of a collection of poems, Night Sweat.

Author Talk: Blind Bombing: How Microwave Radar Brought the Allies to D-Day

We have a unique author talk with Norman Fine on his new book, Blind Bombing on December 14th at 2PM at Handley Library. Fine tells the little-known story of how microwave radar got the Allies to D-Day in WWII, despite initial apathy and even opposition by many in the entrenched military establishments of Britain and the United States.
