Persistence, grit, trying again, not giving up. There are many ways to put it and it is not an easy thing to teach to our younglings... but do we give up? No! Instead we keep going to model it and apply our problem solving skills.
Both persistence and problem solving are executive functioning skills that help our littles grow to be independent people that can take care of at least their basic needs (life skills, reading, etc.) . Some of the milestones that work towards persistence from a young age include:
1) Increasing ability to stay engaged through a task --such as getting dressed.
2) Practicing skills over and over, even if they are difficult --completing a puzzle.
3) Responding to an adult's feedback for their effort --them trying again.
Below are some things you can check out to help with building persistence in your lives.
1) STEAM Kits.
2) Launchpads.
3) Books to help with persistence.
4) Books to persist through when starting to read.
5) Visiting our floor to play and withstand basic things such as waiting a turn for the toy they want to play with, or a game that is challenging.
