Enter in all ye royalty of the land! Join us in the Land of Kings and Queens for the Pre-Readers!

First things first. If you  haven't signed up yet or have any difficulties navigating this year's challenge, here are some important links to help:Reading animal graphic

As the tutorials above will show you, logging your reading earns you badges and tickets. You can use these tickets for drawings for prizes. Additionally, you can do activities to earn more badges and tickets, and more chances to win.

Most of these badges come with reading suggestions, which leads to more reading, which leads to more badges and tickets! And since we will be starting holds for curbside pickup, you can look at this week's tagged list to put in the search engine for several great stories to place on hold for pickup. Be sure to check out details here on how to get your books.

If you watch a virtual program with a story included, it counts towards your logged reading and activity badges. Virtual programs have their own activity badges, so when you go online to watch, look for the corresponding badge and activity through Beanstack. The calendar will give you a hint for the badges to look for.

Each week we'll highlight an activity badge and activities, but keep in mind, you can work on these badges at any time during our summer reading challenge.

This week, we'll focus on the Land of Kings and Queens Activity Badge and all of the virtual programs that accompany this. You will find these on Beanstack when you click on the tab for Activity Badges.

If you have a Pre-Reader who is logging books read, scroll until you see this picture:

Land of Kings and Queens Graphic for Pre-ReadersComplete 3 activities related to this theme that include the Five Practices of Early Literacy-Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, Playing-to earn a virtual raffle ticket.

  • Talking - Bounce or tap along to the old rhyme, “The Queen of Hearts”.
    The Queen of Hearts
The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts,
    All on a summer's day.
The Knave of Hearts, he stole the tarts,
    And took them clean away.
The King of Hearts, called for the tarts,
And scolded the knave full score.
The Knave of Hearts, brought back the tarts,
And vowed he'd steal no more.
    Ask some questions.
What is a tart? Have you ever had one?
    What is a knave?
Should he have stolen the tarts?
(Note: A knave is another name for a Jack from a deck of cards.)

  • Singing - Learn the lap bounce “Noble Duke of York”.
    Noble Duke of York

  • Reading - Check out and read any book from this week’s search tag: #landofkings

  • Writing - Work on fine motor skills while you decorate a crown. You can trace and cut out a crown onto a paper plate or stiff paper, punch holes, and lace yarn through the holes.
Download your crown template here: Crown Template

This link has a PDF attached to it. You may need to download a plugin to view it.

  • Playing - Play cards!
With 2 decks of cards, remove the kings, queens, and jacks to use.
Turn them face down, mix them up and play the memory game.
For younger children, remove a few cards.
For older children, add more cards to add to the challenge!
