Penguin Parade Storytime

Are you ready to read this week? This week we celebrate one of our favorite snow-loving animals: Penguins!

Our Winter Reading Challenge is in full swing and you have until January 31st to read, log, and win! It’s not too late to join in so go to HandleyRegional.org/YouthWinterReading to learn more. You can also download a special penguin to print to help us decorate the Winter Reading display case at Bowman Library. Download it from this link or stop by the Bowman Library to pick one up, take home to color and decorate, then bring it back to display!

Do you need some penguin inspiration? You can find great books about our dapper looking friends by typing #pengiuinappreciationday into the search bar. You'll find some great books such as:

Penguins Love Their ABCs by  Sarah Aspinall. Mama Penguin has hidden all the alphabet letters in the snow, with each letter marked by a clue, and her six little penguins must find them all and bring them home--to a big bowl of alphabet soup.

Penguins Love Colors by Sarah Aspinall. Six little penguins named after flowers and plants decide to paint a beautiful picture on the ice for their mother--and end up with paint all over themselves.

Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester. Tacky the penguin does not fit in with his sleek and graceful companions, but his odd behavior comes in handy when hunters come with maps and traps. Join Tacky for a whole series of adventures!

Be Brave Little Penguin by Giles Andreae. Pip-Pip, the littlest penguin, is teased for being afraid of the water until, with his mother's guidance, he finally jumps in.

Waddle! Waddle! by James Proimos. A penguin waddles along, searching for the dancing friend he met yesterday, while encountering other penguins, and a hungry seal on the way.

Up & Down by Britta Teckentrup. Lift the flaps to take Little Penguin on a journey filled with ups and downs.

Penguins, Penguins, Everywhere! by Bob Barner. A parade of irresistible penguins—from climates warm and cold—swim, slide, and waddle across the pages.

Penguins Don't Wear Sweaters! by Marikka Tamura. When an oil spill prevents penguins from doing the things they love to do, Big Boots come and dress them in sweaters until they--and the water--can be cleaned. Includes facts about penguins and why dressing them in sweaters is not always a good idea.

Here are some great penguin songs to enjoy through the week.

I’m a Little Penguin - Download a coloring sheet here!
(Tune: “I’m a Little Teapot”)
I’m a little penguin short and stout.
I flap my wings and waddle about.
I wear a coat that’s black as night.
But my big tummy is soft and white.
I’m a little penguin black and white.
I like to slide across the ice.
When I reach the water, I dive right in.
I hunt for fish, and swim, swim, swim.

If You're a Penguin and You Know It
(Tune: "If You're Happy and You Know It")
If you're a penguin and you know it
flap your wings (flap, flap)
If you're a penguin and you know it
flap your wings (flap, flap)
If you're a penguin and you know it
and you really want to show it,
If you're a penguin and you know it
flap your wings (flap, flap)
If you're a penguin and you know it
waddle your feet (waddle, waddle)...
If you're a penguin and you know it
eat a fish (yum, yum)...
If you're a penguin and you know it
go for a swim (swim, swim)...

Five Little Penguins
Five little penguins went out to play,
Over the ice cap far away.
Mother Penguins said, Eep, eep, eep, eep!”
Four Little Penguins came back to sleep.
(count down three, two, one)
No little penguins went out to play,
Over the ice cap far away.
Mother Penguins said, Eep, eep, eep, eep!”
All the little penguins came back to sleep!

Have You Ever Seen a Penguin?
(Tune: “Have You Ever Seen a Lassie?”
Have you ever seen a penguin?
A penguin. . .a penguin!
Have you ever seen a penguin
swim this way and that way?
Swim this way and that way,
and this way and that way?
Have you ever seen a penguin
swim this way and that? (point)
Have you ever seen a penguin?
A penguin. . .a penguin!
Verses: slide . . . waddle . .

Enjoy all of our great activities online this week and make sure you head over to join our reading challenge!
