Play Ball BooklistFall is here and for some that means pumpkin spice, falling leaves, harvests, and the return of warm sweaters. For others, it means football, basketball, soccer and more! Whether you love to play ball for sports, prefer to bounce your ball on a paddle-ball, or toss it back and forth with your dog, we'll be celebrating all this week at storytimes for Handley Regional Library System.

For ball inspired books, look up the tag: #fallball in our calendar. Come hear some stories at storytime at any of our library branches, and join us for some great songs and activities. If you're feeling like adding a craft to your ball play, try the following:

Bowling at Home

Collect nine used but uncrushed soda bottles, of equal size. Rinse them clean, and decorate them with paper and tape if you are feeling fancy. Next, clear a path on a smooth floor surface to act as your bowling lane. If you want, you can also use a hallway or cushions to mark the edge of the lane. Set your homemade bowling pins up, and then use a soft ball to knock them down!

Looking for some songs to take to the ball game? Here are some great ones to start with:

Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Take me out to the ballgame
Take me out to the crowd
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks
I don’t care if I ever get back
Let’s root, root, root for the home team
If they don’t win, it’s a shame
And it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out
At the old ballgame!

Good game!
When all the goals are scored,
(motion to kick a ball)
And the final score is on the board
(point to scoreboard)
We go up to the other team who came,
(take a step forward)
And always shake hands and say,
“Good game!”
(shake hands)

Five Little Footballs
Five little footballs trying hard to score
1 makes a touchdown
Hear the crowd roar! (Cheer!)
(Continue counting down each verse

Soccer Song
(Sing to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Kick, kick, kick the ball,
Soccer is such fun.
Pass the ball and kick the ball,
And run, run, run, run, run!

This is the Way
This is the way we bounce the ball,
bounce the ball, bounce the ball,
This is the way we bounce the ball,
when we play basketball.
Kick the ball…
When we play soccer.

Hike the ball…
When we play football.
Swing the bat…
When we play baseball.
