Are you curious about your family's past? Whether you're just starting your genealogy journey or you're a seasoned researcher, the Handley Regional Library System offers a treasure trove of free genealogy and local history resources to help you dig deep into your roots.

Here’s a look at the powerful tools available through our library system—some of which you can access from home, and others you’ll want to explore during a visit to one of our branches.

🧬 In-Library Only Resources

Some databases are only available when you're inside one of our library branches—Handley, Bowman, or Clarke County Libraries. These specialized tools offer access to valuable collections not available to the general public online:

  • Ancestry Library Edition
A go-to resource for census records, military records, immigration data, and more. Use library computers or Wi-Fi to access this goldmine of family history.

  • American Ancestors by the New England Historic Genealogical Society
Focuses on early American and New England records. This is another resource only accessible from within our library branches.

  • FamilySearch Affiliate Library
As a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, we provide access to expanded records not available to free users online. Visit a branch to view these exclusive digitized documents.

🌐 Accessible Anywhere with Your Library Card

These online databases are available 24/7 with your Handley Regional Library System card:

  • Fold3
Discover military records, photos, and personal documents that honor those who served. Ideal for researchers focusing on veterans and military history.

  • HeritageQuest
A robust collection of U.S. census data, family histories, local histories, and more—perfect for both beginners and experienced genealogists.

  • Newspaper Archive
Dive into historical newspapers from across the country to find obituaries, announcements, and the everyday news that paints a picture of your ancestors’ lives.

  • Advantage Digital Newspaper Archive
Access digitized editions of The Winchester Star and other local newspapers. A great way to research Winchester and surrounding areas from your own device.

  • PastPerfect
Browse photos, documents, and artifacts from our local history collections. A must-visit for those researching Shenandoah Valley history or just curious about the past.
