When I Grow Up Storytime @ HRLS

When I Grow Up

You used to creep and crawl real well
But then you learned to walk real well.
There was a time you’d coo and cry,
But then you learned to talk and, my!
You almost always try.
You almost always do your best.
I like the way you’re growing up.
It’s fun, that’s all.

~ Mister Rogers, “You’re Growing” 1967

This week at the Handley Regional Library System we’ll explore stories and songs about growing up and all the exciting thoughts and feelings that go with it. Search the catalog for the tag: #whenigrowup and take home some books to explore the many dreams and plans your child may wish to explore.

Below are some wonderful songs to add to your week exploring the journey. Scroll to the bottom of the page for some additional ideas to add to your week.

I’m Growing Up
Tune: Five Little Ducks
I’m growing up as you can see
You never know what I may be!
A fireman putting out the flames,
A weatherman saying when it rains.

A teacher telling you what to learn,
Or a ballerina on toes I’ll turn.
An athlete who will win a race,
An astronaut in outer space!

I’m growing up as you can see
You never know what I may be!
Everyday I’m growing strong,
I’ll be big soon, it won’t take long!

I Measure Myself (Suit actions to words)
I measure myself from my head to my toes,
I measure my arms, starting right by my nose.
I measure my legs and I measure me all,
I measure to see if I’m growing tall.

Grow, Grow, Growing Up
Tune: Row, row, row your boat
Grow, grow, growing up,
Growing every day.
I can feed myself now
I’m growing every day.

Grow, grow, growing up…
I can put my own shoes on…
I can put my shirt on….
I can carry my books myself…
I can put my toys away…
(Make up more verses!)

The People in Our Town
(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)
The librarian in our town says,
“Read a book, read a book, read a book,
“The librarian in our town says “Read a book”
all day long.

Repeat with following verses:
The firefighter in our town says, “Stop, drop, and roll” …
The teacher in our town says, “Let’s learn something” …
The carpenter in our town says, “Give me a hammer” …
The mail carrier in our town says, “Here’s your mail” …
The doctor in our town says, “How do you feel?” …
The dentist in our town says, “Open up” …
