A new year, a new Archives After Hours! Our first event of the year will feature a closer look at our local World War I veterans. Local historian Gene Schultz will tell the story of the Handley Plaques: commemorative markers laid near Handley High School in 1924 to honor veterans of World War I from the Winchester-Frederick County Area. Learn about how these plaques were rediscovered and the stories of the individuals they commemorate.
Archives After Hours is designed to provide a close-up look at our collections and the work we do every day in the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives. Following the presentation, attendees are welcome to participate in a short tour of the Archives.
A native of Winchester, Gene Schultz is a graduate of two of the country’s best public schools: John Handley High School and the College of William and Mary where he earned his degree in History. Gene worked with the Virginia Employment Commission for over 35 years before retiring as a Senior Manager in 2012. He has served on numerous committees and boards within the community. His most recent projects have been with the John Handley High School Centennial where he chaired the “One Hundred Handley Notables” committee and the Joint Archives Committee. When not in the Archives doing research or in Williamsburg with his grandchildren, you will most likely find him playing bagpipes with the City of Winchester Pipes and Drums. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. The Society recognized him as the “Historian of the Year” in 2018 for his work researching Winchester’s World War I memorial project.
Space is limited for this event and registration is required. Registration is limited to guests ages 12 and up. See below to register. For more information, contact the Archives at (540) 662-9041 Ext. 17.
