The AAUW is devoted to women’s education, promoting wider opportunities for women, international understanding and cooperation, and encouraging women to apply their skills and training to the complex problems of modern life. Membership in the organization is open to all women holding baccalaureate or higher degrees from accredited colleges or universities.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The American Association of University Women (AAUW) began in Boston in 1881. The seventeen women who founded the organization wanted to assist women in overcoming barriers to higher education and employment. They also believed that encouraging women to pursue education would benefit society as a whole. The AAUW grew to become a national organization with a focus on legislative action to promote equality for women in society and the workplace and also providing educational grants for women scholars and scientists.

The Winchester chapter of AAUW was established in 1931 with 19 charter members. The local organization has been active in promoting and participating in local activities focused on women’s rights, social equality, and education.
