Biographical/Historical: The Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad was chartered by the state of Maryland on February 28, 1827 and incorporated on April 24, 1827 with Philip E. Thomas as president. The development of the railroad was a reaction to the success of the Erie Canal and how that would affect the city of Baltimore. In 1830, the B&O was ready for business. The railroad began to grow and in 1871 expanded its tracks to Pittsburgh, and in 1874 into Chicago; and by 1886 into Philadelphia. With the line into Philadelphia, the B&O was connected to the Philadelphia & Reading & Central Railroad, which enabled passengers to continue up to New York City. During the 1960s, the B&O was taken over by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.
