Biographical/Historical: A private and unchartered Bank of Winchester opened in 1815. It was operated from the house of Joseph Gamble, one of the principal stockholders. He was a tailor and a respected member of the community. This Bank of Winchester operated through 1818.

Mr. Robert Y. Conrad, president, and Mr. Robert B. Wolf, cashier, started a later Bank of Winchester as a savings institution. Located on Loudoun Street, the bank was chartered in 1853. Though it tried to stay open, the Bank of Winchester was forced to close in 1862. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Dr. William S. Miller, an officer of the bank, hid the assets and papers of the bank until after the war when the bank could safely disburse the funds to the stockholders.
