SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains the Journal of Rev. Benjamin Brooke (1837-1863), pastor of the Market Street Methodist Church, and a transcript of a sermon delivered by Rev. Brooke on February 3, 1861 entitled “Olive Branch: or The Conservatism of Christianity.”

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL:  Benjamin Brooke was a native of Fauquier County, Virginia, born February 5, 1820. In 1841 he graduated from Dickinson College and joined the Baltimore Conference. Brooke married Elizabeth Glasscock of Fauquier County, VA in 1844. He lived in Winchester, Virginia between 1860 and 1864, and was pastor of Market Street Methodist Church. His journal covers his and the church’s experience during the turbulent Civil War years. After the war he lived in Memphis, TN, and Pittsburgh, PA, serving as an Episcopal minister. He often visited Winchester, and preached at both the Methodist and Episcopal churches. Brooke died on September 25, 1882 at his farm near White Hall in Frederick County, VA.
