SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains a number of account books kept by Henry Baetjer & Company of Winchester, Virginia. The account books include references to the Miller Plantation Company, Baetjer’s Insurance, and other assets and investments. There is also a household account book kept by Edith M. Baetjer and a record of the division of Baetjer’s estate.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Henry Beatjer was born in Germany in 1841 and immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1859. Beatjer moved to Winchester shortly after the end of the Civil War and opened a dry good business on the southeast corner of Boscawen and Loudoun Street. Over the next 41 years, Baetjer’s business grew to one of the largest and most successful businesses in Winchester. His son, Dr. Frederick Henry Baetjer, became one of the leading pioneers in X-Ray research. Baetjer died on May 11, 1912, and is buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA.
