SCOPE AND CONTENT: The H. (Hubert) Lee Brumback II Collection contains a diary from the Civil War, , covering the period from April 21, 1863 to June 25, 1863, with daily entries by Jacob H Brumback. Brumback mentions participation in the Grand Review by J.E.B. Stuart (1833-1864) on June 5, 1863, as well as in the Battle of Brandy Station (VA), 1863, and the Battle of Upperville (VA) on June 21, 1863. He mentions participating in many small raids, especially in West Virginia, in which the regiment captured both Union soldiers and supplies.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Jacob Henry Francis Brumback (1839-1827) served in Company C of the 12th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States of America, as a private. He lived in Frederick County, Virginia as of March 11, 1862, when he enlisted in Winchester. Records show him present for muster periods Sept. /Oct. 1863 through July/Aug. 1864. He was paroled at Winchester on May 10, 1865.
