EXTENT: 8.05 linear feet
LANGUAGE OF MATERIALS: English and German
DATES: 1775-2017
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Belle Grove Collection contains personal and business papers on Belle Grove and the Hite family, including legal, financial and real estate documents; tax records; newspapers, magazines clippings; architectural records; archaeological records; and photographic materials. In addition to documenting the lives of the Hite family, this collection includes information on eighteenth and nineteenth-century agricultural practices, the Civil War, and the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.
BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Belle Grove in Middletown, VA was built from 1794 to 1797 for Major and Mrs. Isaac Hite. Hite received the land from his father in 1783. That same year, Isaac Hite married Nelly Conway Madison, sister to James Madison. The property remained in the Hite family until 1860 when it was sold to John and Benjamin Cooley. During the Civil War, the house was in the midst of the Battle of Cedar Creek. The property had multiple private owners following the Civil War, the last of whom was Francis Welles Hunnewell. Hunnewell, who purchased the property in 1929, took on extensive renovations and later bequeathed the property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A separate, nonprofit organization, Belle Grove, Inc. operates the business side of the farm.

DATES: 1775-2017
SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains personal and business papers on Belle Grove and the Hite family, including legal, financial and real estate documents; tax records; newspapers, magazines clippings; architectural records; archaeological records; and photographic materials.
