Biographical/Historical: Braddock Street United Methodist Church formed from the Market Street Methodist Church following a dispute over reserved seating for students from the nearby Valley Female Institute.  It was formally organized on July 24, 1858, under the Virginia Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, by Sunday School Superintendent William R. Denny. The first minister was Reverend George H. Ray, who arrived in November 1858. During the Civil War, the church was used as a hospital by both sides. The church building underwent a major renovation in 1898-99. Between World War I (1914-1918) and World War II, (1939-1945) the church acquired additional land and its membership continued to grow.
