Scope and Content: This ledger records the transactions of a gristmill owned and operated by John W. Earhart during the years 1855 to 1858.

(1 box) Last updated 10/04.

Biographical/Historical: This John W. Earhart is probably the one who married Emily V. Sappington on December 13, 1850 in Frederick County, VA. By August 1860, John and Emily appear in the U.S. Census records for 1860 for Hannibal township, Marion County, Missouri, occupation "miller," birth in VA.

Twenty-eight names "randomly" extracted from the ledger were compared against the U.S. Census records for 1850 and 1860. The majority was from Clarke and Frederick Counties. Although not all were listed as having occupations, they were obviously related to a mill, and the evidence strongly suggests a location in western Clarke/eastern Frederick Counties.
