SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Garland R. Quarles Elementary School Records is comprised of scrapbooks maintained by the staff of Garland R. Quarles Elementary School in Winchester, Virginia. The scrapbooks date from 1955 to 1970. It contains news clippings, pictures, and other memorabilia from school and local events. The collection also has materials about school integration. Also included are items from the 50th anniversary celebration in 2005.
BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Garland R. Quarles Elementary School opened on September 19, 1955 with 325 students. The school cost $326,931 to build and is situated on S. Loudoun St. in Winchester. It was named after Garland R. Quarles, who had served as the superintendent of Winchester Public Schools. The school celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2005 and still operates as part of Winchester City Schools.
