Scope and Content: This collection contains mainly records of municipalities of Frederick County, VA, dating from 1773. A copy of county Code of Laws and a bond book licensing ordinaries, 1804-1815, are found therein. Also included are voter registration record books for 1882-1971 for Back Creek, Gainesboro, Shawnee, Opequon, and Stonewall Magisterial districts. Additional material includes the Griffin Taylor Tax Book (1790), witness certificates, Direct Tax Fund (1893), Road book (1866-1869), Liquor Licenses (1880s), and an index to executions (1852-1860). In addition, the Board of Supervisor Minutes and List of Representatives to Frederick County Boards, Commissions, Committees, and Organizations are included from 1982 to present.

Biographical/Historical: Frederick County was divided from Orange County, Virginia, in November 1738. Frederick was named for Frederick, then Prince of Wales. The first court was held in Frederick County in 1743.
