SCOPE AND CONTENT:  This Funk & Ray Records consist of business records for Funk Furniture, Funk and Ray, and Funk and Son, all of Winchester, Virginia. The first three boxes contain account ledgers of the Funk Furniture store from 1881 through 1929. The fourth box contains the Funk and Ray Funeral records for the years 1901 to 1923. These provide information about the deceased such as cause of death, relatives, church, birth and death dates, internment information, etc. for the years 1901 to 1923.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: James N. W. Funk and his son H. C. A. Funk founded Funk and Son in Winchester, Virginia at 7 South Market Street. Helen Ray Funk Brewer, H.C.A. Funk’s daughter, became the first licensed embalmer in Winchester after passing the State Board Examination in 1927.

John Ray (1841-1905) served in the Stonewall Brigade during the Civil War as well as being a business owner in Winchester, mostly in partnership with James Funk. He served several terms on the City Council, was a member of the School Board, and a director of Union Bank. He first married Nellie Funk, the sister of James Funk. His second wife was Jennie Smith.
