SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Joy MacDonald Collection contains research completed by MacDonald into the history of free black people living in the areas of Winchester, Frederick County, Warren County, and Clarke County prior to the Civil War. The research is focused mainly on land tax records and includes information about several prominent African American families including the Orricks. The materials also include information about publishing and distribution. Copies of Ms. MacDonald’s work are available in the Archives Reading Room.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Joy MacDonald lived in Frederick County, Virginia and undertook extensive research into the history of free blacks in the Lower Shenandoah Valley.
