SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains account books, treasurer’s records, stock certificates, and other miscellaneous papers concerning the construction of the Martinsburg and Winchester Turnpike.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL:  The Martinsburg and Winchester Turnpike Company originated in 1834 with the goal of connecting Martinsburg in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Winchester, Virginia. Construction began in 1849 the road was open for business in 1879. The road is now a portion of Route 11 and known as the Martinsburg Pike.
