SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains records of the 136th Virginia Militia from 1828 to 1847. It includes some personal correspondence. The collection also contains information about both of the Strasburg and Woodstock fire companies.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Benjamin Stickley was born on May 27, 1806. He became a farmer and was married to Elizabeth Stickley. He was captain of the 1st Battalion and 136th Regiment of the Virginia Militia in 1837, 1838, and 1842. Stickley died on August 5, 1853, of tuberculosis. He was buried in Stickley Cemetery in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
