SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains records of the 136^th Virginia Militia from 1828 to 1847. It includes some personal correspondence. The collection also contains information about both of the Strasburg and Woodstock fire companies.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Benjamin Stickley was born on May 27, 1806. He became a farmer and was married to Elizabeth Stickley. He was captain of the 1^st Battalion and 136^th Regiment of the Virginia Militia in 1837, 1838, and 1842. Stickley died on August 5, 1853, of tuberculosis. He was buried in Stickley Cemetery in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
