SCOPE AND CONTENT:  This collection contains an account book belonging to George W. Seevers for the Taylor Hotel and the adjacent store owned by George W. Seevers (1796-1869). It contains customer accounts from 1850-1874 for boarding fees, mail fees, and sundry mercantile items purchased at the Winchester, Virginia, hotel and store. There are also inserts consisting of receipts to customers and a list, 1800-1862, of slaves’ names, births and deaths.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: George W. Seevers was born in 1796. On 10 October 1831, he married Ann McKendlis. When Bushrod Taylor died in 1847, Seevers took over the Taylor Hotel and store in Winchester. Seevers also served as mayor of Winchester, Virginia, from 1843 to 1847. After completion of his term, Seevers was appointed an officer at Farmer’s Bank of Virginia in Winchester. He died in 1869.
