SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection contains the account book of Tilman Shumate, who operated a general merchandise business in Frederick County, Virginia. There are also records of the settlement of Shumate’s estate in June 1847 and some loose papers which were found in the account book.
BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Tilman (also spelled Tilghman) Shumate is thought to have been born around 1815 in Fauquier County, VA. He married Eliza Brown in Frederick County, VA in 1836. Eliza Brown Shumate died in 1877 is buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia. Her husband’s burial site is unknown.
