SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection includes several transcripts and typescripts of the diary of Rev. Christian Streit, who was an 18th century Lutheran minister in Winchester, VA, USA. The diary, translated from German into English, covers the years from 1785 to 1788. Some transcripts include an index. The collection also contains a biographical sketch of Rev. Christian Streit, a report of marriages performed from Oct. 5, 1785 to Sept. 24, 1786, and letters written in 1831 by Susan Streit, his third wife. The diary is in the collection of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. It is also included in the book This Heritage by William E. Eisenberg.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Christian Streit was born on June 7, 1749, in New Jersey. He graduated from the Academy and College in Philadelphia and took theological home study with Henry M. Muhlenberg and Provost Wrangel. He was ordained in 1770 and served with the 8th Virginia Regiment from 1776 to 1777. Streit took on the pastorate of Winchester in July 1785 serving Winchester, Strasburg, and Woodstock, VA. He remained at his post until his death on March 10, 1812.
