SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Catherine Tisinger Collection consists of land documents, mostly original, collected by Richard Tisinger, Ph.D. which cover dates from 1763 to 1850. The collection also includes an N. Currier lithograph copy entitled “The Bride,” and a photocopy of a plat by Harry Long of New Market, Virginia, dated 1978, of Reuben Allen’s land acquisitions from the 1730s through to the 1740s.
BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The documents in this collection show transfers of land and property between several individuals central to the early history and development of the Lower Shenandoah Valley, including Issac Zane, Alexander Hite, Lord Fairfax, and James Wood. Many of these grants are listed in Gray’s compilation of Land Grants. The documents cover the counties of Frederick, Shenandoah, Hardy, Rockingham, and other neighboring towns and counties.
