SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.), Turner Ashby Chapter #184, Winchester, VA. There are copies of applications for membership in the local U.D.C. and minute books from 1891-1904, 1909-1920, 1926-1962, 1965-1974, 1987-1989, 1993-1996 are in the collection. These items, and especially the application records, are valuable sources for genealogical research. The collection also includes articles and news clippings about Confederate veterans’ events in Virginia and other southern states, as well as materials produced by the U.D.C. to memorialize the Confederacy.
BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The National Association of the Daughters of the Confederacy was founded in 1894, primarily to memorialize the Confederacy through memorials and other activities. The name changed to the United Daughters of the Confederacy soon after. The Turner Ashby Chapter #184, U.D.C. is one of nine chapters in the Virginia Division, which were chartered on November 11, 1897. The Turner Ashby Chapter was originally referred to as Chapter #54, Virginia Division. In 1997, the designation #184 was put into use.
Women in Winchester and Frederick County began to organize very soon after the end of the Civil War. In 1865, in Winchester, Va., a group of women led by Mary Dunbar Williams formed the Ladies’ Stonewall Memorial Association to provide for the burial of Confederate dead. The forerunner of the Turner Ashby Chapter was first organized in 1894 under the leadership of Miss Kate Conrad as an auxiliary to Turner Ashby Camp, Confederate veterans. At this time, members began to assist with the annual June 6th Confederate Memorial Day ceremony.
