SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Wood-Woods Family Collection contains genealogical materials from Virginia county records and excerpts from several books concerning the Wood(s) and allied families.  It also includes several issues of different genealogical magazines published by the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society, the Wood(s) family genealogy publication, genealogies and histories of various states and families, and other miscellaneous Wood(s) family materials.                              

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The families involved in this collection are from various counties in Virginia, Tennessee, and other southern states.  The surnames Wood, Woods, Alexander, Allen, Avent, Baldridge, Campbell, Christian, Drury, Skelton and Agnew are all mentioned in these records.

Tom Baldridge, the compiler of this collection, was born in Jackson, Tennessee on March 11, 1909. He began his career working in theater operations and moved to Winchester, Va. in 1929 to manage the Capitol and Colonial Theaters. In 1938, Baldridge became the director of the Apple Blossom Festival and served in that position for three decades. His experience in the movie business allowed him to bring many celebrities to participate in events. Baldridge also co-founded the Friends of the Handley Regional Library.
