Books Like Us Storytime!

Are you ready to read this week? How about some books just like us! That means ones like you too!

The theme this year for the Winter Reading Challenge has been Books LIke Us! I hope you have been joining us. If not, head to http://handleyregional.org/youthwinterreading to learn more and read along with us on our final week.

We have so many wonderful books you can find at any of our three library branches, and you can find some that are just like you, or learn about what it is like to be someone else! Click on the search bar above and type in the tag: #bookslikeus for a list.

Last week we celebrated penguins and have a display where your artwork can be placed. You can download and print out a special penguin and help us decorate the Winter Reading display case at Bowman Library. Download it here or stop by the Bowman Library to pick one up, take home to color and decorate; then bring it back to display!

How many books like us can you find at the library? Can you find one like you? Here are a few to consider:

All are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold: Join the call for a better world with this New York Times bestselling picture book about a school where diversity and inclusion are celebrated.

Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry:  It's up to Daddy to give his daughter an extra-special hair style in this story of self-confidence and the love between fathers and daughters.

This Love by Isabel Otter: Love is a language that is understood and shared by people all around the world. Whether we are reading quietly with a loved one or playing on the beach with friends, all across the globe, the love we feel for one another is the same.

That is My Dream! by Langston Hughes: “Dream Variation,” one of Langston Hughes's most celebrated poems, about the dream of a world free of discrimination and racial prejudice, is now a picture book stunningly illustrated by Daniel Miyares

Under My Hijab by Hena Khan: As a young girl observes that each of six women in her life wears her hijab and hair in a different way, she considers how to express her own style one day.

Magnificent Homespun Brown by Samara Cole Doyon: Told by a succession of exuberant young narrators, Magnificent Homespun Brown is a story -- a song, a poem, a celebration -- about feeling at home in one’s own beloved skin.

I am Human by Susan Verde: A child recognizes his own humanity, his capacity for doing harm and being harmed, his ability to feel joy and sadness, and his belief in hope and promise to keep learning.

All Because You Matter by Tami Charles: A lyrical, heart-lifting love letter to Black and Brown children everywhere reminds them how much they matter, that they have always mattered and they always will.

We have a coloring page for this week. It includes a couple of songs to share and can be downloaded here

Here is a little rhyme Ms. Cheryl wrote for your book hunt and it goes well with the song Twinkle Little Star:

A Book For Me
I'm heading to the library
To find a book that's just like me!
A story about my favorite thing,
One for grandma's house I'll bring.
The perfect book I'm sure to see,
Wow! I found a book for me!

You can find so many books! You can count some while you’re there. Learn the tune by watching the Ready to Read on Monday, January 25 at 11am on Facebook and YouTube.

Five Little Books
Five little books at the library
Five little books as great as can be
Along comes girl with her library card
And takes one home to read!

Four little books at the library
Four little books as great as can be
Along comes boy with his library card
And takes one home to read!

Three little books at the library
Three little books as great as can be
Along comes girl with her library card
And takes one home to read!

Two little books at the library
Two little books as great as can be
Along comes boy with his library card
And takes one home to read!

One little book at the library
One little book as great as can be
Along comes a child with their library card
And takes one home to read!

Guess what? We have a LOT more than five books! So head over to the library and see how many you can count.

Big Books, Little Books
Big Books, little books
(hold hands wide, then close)
Short books, tall
(hands down low, then up high)
Thin books, fat books,
(hold up flat hands, then make fists)
I love them all.
(hug self)

Librarian in the Town
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)

The librarian in the town says
"Read a book, Read a book, Read a book"
The librarian in the town says
"Read a book"
All day long.
