Imagine your story this week in the Land of Myths and Magic!

This week, we'll focus on the Land of Myths and Magic Activity Badge and all of the virtual programs that accompany this. You will find these on Beanstack when you log into your account and click on the tab for Activity Badges. If you don't have your account set up, we have links at the bottom of this post to help you navigate our summer reading program.

  • Talking - Talking - Wizard Charades:
    Say the rhyme, then have your child act out an imaginary creature, an animal, or an object like a car or plane. Don’t tell!
    Have the caregiver try to guess what the child becomes.
    “Wizard, wizard please do tell,
    What did I become when you cast your spell?”

  • Singing - Singing - Explore actions and directions while you sing, “Dragon, Dragon” to the tune of “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear”.
    Dragon, dragon, turn around.
    Dragon, dragon, touch the ground.
    Dragon, dragon, fly up high.
    Dragon, dragon float in the sky.
    Dragon, dragon, shake your tail.
    Dragon, dragon, pound a nail.
    Dragon, dragon, give a roar.
    Dragon, dragon, drop to the floor.

  • Reading - Check out and read any book from this week’s search tag: #landofmyth
  • Writing - Cutting Shapes:
    Give children a variety of textures to cut for more interactive fun. This is a great activity for being creative and using imagination.
    Supplies:
    ● Construction Paper
    ● Tissue Paper
    ● Craft Foam
    ● Recycled materials
    (newspaper,magazines, junk mail, cereal boxes)
    ● Pipe Cleaners
    ● Child Scissors
    Instructions:
    Give each child a pair of child scissors.
    Place different cutting materials at the table. Instruct the children to practice cutting using their imagination. Give prompts if needed, such as something from the garden or your favorite animal.

  • Playing - Abracadabra!
    Deposit a variety of items on the table (star, wand, etc.)
    Children observe the items closely for one minute.
    Cover the objects with a blanket and remove one object.
    Remove the blanket and invite children to identify the item which disappeared.

Remember, if you watch a virtual program with a story included, it counts towards your logged reading and activity badges, so track those books! Virtual programs have their own activity badges too, so when you go online to watch, look for the corresponding badge and activity through Beanstack. The calendar will give you a hint for the badges to look for. 

Each week we'll highlight an activity badge and activities, but keep in mind, you can work on these badges at any time during our summer reading challenge.
