New Online Search Improves Access to Digital and Physical Materials

Handley Regional Library System has launched a new service enhancement on the library website search bar that improves access to library resources – from items in their traditional library catalog to digital content ranging from eBooks, movies, journals, databases, and more.  The improved technology acts as a powerful search engine, connecting patrons to all the library system’s materials, content, and resources through a single search.  Prior to this new technology, known in the industry as a “Discovery”, patrons had to search many locations, databases, and resources for more information on one topic.  The community can experience the new enhancement on the library website at www.handleyregional.org by selecting the “Everything” option in the search bar and type in their topic.

“This new functionality is crucial and a big deal in the library world,” says John Huddy, Director of Handley Regional Library System.  “Our website now acts like a powerful search engine, saving our patrons time and improving their overall library experience.  We literally have hundreds of thousands of online and digital materials and this new technology will give library users more options and keep them informed.  When patrons enter a keyword, author, or title in the “Everything” section of our website search, not only will you see a book or DVD based on what you’re looking for, but now you’ll get linked to published articles, research databases, magazines, and other resources based on your topic.  It opens up a whole new world of learning and discovery.”

The new update also features quicker access for materials into the Digital Library.  Once you enter your library card, you won’t have to enter it again when accessing some of the most used items in the Digital Library.  “It’s a single sign-on, so you won’t have to remember multiple passwords.”

Despite the pandemic, the library system reports that it has seen an increase in digital content and receives thousands of visits to their website and catalog each month.  “We all know life is complicated right now.  We are constantly looking at ways to meeting the needs of community while improving and easing access to public library services in our area.”
