Puppies and Kitties Storytime!

Are you ready to read this week? We’re celebrating our favorite fluffy friends, Puppies and Kitties!

When you click on the search bar above and type the tag: #pupsonparade, you'll finds some great puppy books, or try the tag: #falinefriends to find some fun books about kitties, like the ones below!

Clover Kitty goes to Kittygarten by Laura Purdie Salas: Clover Kitty does NOT want to go to kittygarten! Although she might like a friend to play with, kittygarten feels overwhelming for a sensory-sensitive kitty like Clover. And when she arrives, it is exactly as she fears: her classroom is too loud, the lights are too bright, and everyone comes too close. So Clover throws a fit…and decides to quit kittygarten. But when a classmate comes to check on her, she begins to reconsider. Maybe it’s time for Clover to give kittygarten another chance?

A Family for Louie by Alexandra Thompson: A French bulldog who loves gourmet food has trouble finding a family that is just right for him.

Tomie dePaola's Cats and Kittens by Tomie dePaola: Patrick goes to Granny Twinkle's for a free kitten and learns everything there is to know about cats--their different breeds, care, place in art and literature, and history.

Bad Dog by Mike Boldt: A little girl gets a cat as a new pet but insists it's a dog, even if it doesn't act very dog-like.

Roy Digs Dirt by David Shannon: Roy is a West Highland terrier who loves to dig in the dirt and mud; sometimes he buries things, and sometimes he finds things, but mostly he just likes to dig--even though he does not like the bath that may follow the digging.

Paolo, Emperor of Rome by Mac Barnett: When Paolo the dachshund finally escapes the hair salon where he lives, he has adventures beyond his wildest dreams amid the beauty and culture of Rome.

Plus, we have several songs and fingerplays to choose from and you can download two with this week's coloring page!

If you like doggies, here is a song for you!

How Much is that Doggy in the Window?

How much is that doggy in the window? (Bark twice)
The one with the waggily tail.
How much is that doggy in the window? (Bark twice)
I do hope that doggy's for sale!
(Repeat, substituting other things for window, like basket and wagon.)

Six Little Dogs
(Sung to: "Six Little Ducks")
Six little dogs that I once knew,
fat ones, skinny ones, fair ones too.
But the one little dog with the brown curly fur,
He led the others with a grr, grr, grr.
Grr, grr, grr
Grr, grr, grr
He led the others with a grr, grr, GRR!

Five Little Puppies
Five little puppies were playing in the sun.  (hold up hands, fingers extended)
This one saw a rabbit, and he began to run. (bend down 1st finger)
This one saw a butterfly, and he began to race. (bend down 2nd finger)
This one saw a cat, and he began to chase. (bend down 3rd finger)
This one tried to catch his tail, and he went round and round. (bend down 4th finger)
This one was so quiet, he never made a sound. (bend down thumb)

I'm a Little Kitty Cat

I'm a little kitty cat
Nice and sweet
Here are my whiskers
and here are my feet
When I go out hunting, mice beware
Or you might just have a scare!

I Know a Cat (tune: “B-I-N-G-O”)
I know a cat with perky ears, and Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,  and Kitty is her name-o.
She makes a sound and it’s “Meow”, and Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, and Kitty is her name-o.

Five Little Kittens
Five little kittens standing in a row.
(Stand all five fingers up on one hand)
They nod their heads to the children so.
(Bend your fingers in a ”nod”)
They run to the left, they run to the right.
(Move hand/fingers to the left, then right)
They stand up and stretch in the bright sunlight.
(Stand fingers, stretching high)
Along comes a dog, who’s in for some fun.
(Bring other hand out like a dog chasing)
M-e-oooow, see those kittens run!
(Have hand “run” behind back)

Have a lot of fun this week with stories and songs about puppies and kitties and we’ll see you next week for a new theme!
