Send a Letter Storytime!

Are you ready to read this week? We’re reading and writing mail and we’re getting ready to send our own letter!

In a day of email and instant messaging, it’s very exciting when you get an actual card or letter in the mail. We can write a letter, put an address on the envelope, seal it up, put on a stamp, and drop it in the mailbox! After that, the mail carrier will take it where it needs to go.

Read some books about letters and mail by clicking on the search bar and typing the tag:#sendaletter. You’ll find some great books there, such as the ones seen here.

Mailbox Magic by Nancy Poydar. A young boy who wants to receive mail of his own sends away for an offer he sees on the back of a cereal box.

Stanley by William Bee. It's going to be a busy day for Stanley! He gets up early to sort through all of the mail in his post office. Then he sets off through town to deliver it all. Myrtle, Little Woo, and Charlie all receive exciting gifts and letters. But will everyone be happy with what's in Stanley's mail bag?

Ten Thank-You Letters by Daniel Kirk. While Pig is trying to finish a thank-you note to his grandmother, his best friend Rabbit repeatedly interrupts to borrow supplies for a series of his own notes, thanking all of the special people in their lives.

Love, Mouserella by David Ezra Stein. A young mouse girl named Mouserella writes a letter with pictures to her beloved grandmouse in the country, letting her know all of the things that have been going on in her life in the three days since she has seen her last.

Dear Primo by Duncan Tonatiuh. Two cousins, one in Mexico and one in New York City, write to each other and learn that even though their daily lives differ, at heart the boys are very similar.

A Letter for Leo by Sergio Ruzzier. When Leo, a weasel mailman, rescues a young bird that was separated from his flock, the two become friends and Leo's dream of one day receiving a letter of his own may finally come true.

Herman's Letter by Tom Percival. Herman the bear and Henry the raccoon are best friends. But Henry's moving far, far away! So what do they do? Promise to write each other all the time and stay best friends forever, that's what. But being pen-pals is easier said than done, especially when your best friend seems to be having way more fun than you are.

You can sing a couple of songs while you compose your letters and don't forget to download your a coloring page to practice your writing and pictures on to plan your next letter.

Write,  Write, Write Your Cards

(To the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
Write, Write, Write your cards
and lots of letters too!
You can send them them to your friends
and they will write back too!

Lovely Letter

(To the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)
Oh, I got a lovely letter in the mail (clap, clap)
Oh, I got a lovely letter in the mail (clap, clap)
Getting mail is so much fun
Let’s see who sent this one
Oh, this lovely little letter in the mail. (clap, clap)

In the Mailbox
Sung to: "Are You Sleeping?"

In the mailbox, in the mailbox,
Look and see, look and see!
A package or a postcard!
A letter from my grandma!
Just for me, just for me!

In the mailbox, in the mailbox,
Look and see, look and see!
A magazine that's dandy!
A valentine with candy!
Just for me, just for me!

Mail Carrier Song
Sung to: "My Bonnie lies over the ocean"
I get to sort the mail,
Then carry it to your home.
The mail comes from all over,
Like New York, Paris, and Rome.
Mail, mail, mail, mail,
I love to deliver the mail, mail, mail.
Mail, Mail, Mail, Mail,
I love to deliver the mail.

Do you Drive a Mail Truck?
Sung to: "Do your ears hang low?"
Do you drive a mail truck,
Walk in snow and rain and muck,
To deliver mail over hill and dale?
Do you carry great big boxes,
Heavy like they're filled with rocks?
Do you drive a mail truck?

Have a lot of fun this week with yoru letter writing and we’ll see you next week for a new theme!
