Tails & Tales of Farm Animals!

Are you ready to read this week? We’re heading to the farm to visit our Farm Friends!

Have you signed up for our summer reading program? You can read, log, and win with a new theme each week. Head to HandleyRegional.org/YouthSummerReading for all the details on how you can earn virtual raffle tickets towards prizes and free books from the library as you log your reading through the Beanstack App.

This week’s badge challenge is Tails & Tales of Farm Friends and you can complete the activities when you log on to Beanstack, go to the Summer 2021-Tails & Tales for Pre-Readers challenge, scroll down a bit and click on "Badges", then click on "Activity Badges." You'll then look for the Farm Friends badge:

Unearned Farm Badge

Click on the badge and choose any three of the following challenges to earn this week’s badge and a raffle ticket! Once you earn it, the badge will show in color and be added to your growing list of earned badges! Plus, you will earn a virtual ticket you can then use to select the prize drawing you wish to enter.

  • Talking: While grocery shopping, talk about what foods may have come from a farm.

  • Singing: Singing: This song goes with any farm animal that makes a sound! What does a horse say? Or a goose? You can then decide where on the farm they would be and add verses to the song.

  • Farm Sounds
Sung to: "Wheels on the bus"

The cow in barn goes moo, moo, moo,
Moo, moo, moo. Moo, moo, moo,
    repeat
    All around the farm.
The pig in the pen goes oink, oink, oink....
The hens in the coop go cluck....
The lambs on the hill go baa...
The ducks on the pond go quack...

  • Reading: Check out and read any book from this week’s search tag: #talesoffarmfriends

  • Writing: Create a new type of farm vehicle (tractor, truck, plow, harvester) from things around your house. Tag HRLS on social media with a picture of the finished product!

  • Playing: Play “Horses Stop and Go”. Gallop around the room pretending to be a horse. Have a grown up call out “stop” and “go”.

  • Attend a program this week at any Handley Regional Library branch or watch one online. Check the calendar for the perfect program for you! You can also see virtual programs on the Youth Services YouTube playlist.

Looking for more finger plays or songs to sing? Try one of these!

This Little Cow

(Point to each finger in turn.)
This little cow eats grass,
This little cow eats hay,
This little cow looks over the hedge,
This little cow runs away.
And this BIG cow does nothing at all
But lie in the fields all day!
(Lay thumb on palm.)
We'll chase her and chase her and chase her!

Fiddle-I-Fee

I had a cat, my cat pleased me
Fed my cat under yonder tree
My cat says, “Fiddle-i-fee”

I had a hen, my hen pleased me
Fed my hen under yonder tree
My hen says, “chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck”
My cat says, “Fiddle-i-fee”

I had a duck, my duck pleased me
Fed my duck under yonder tree
My duck says, “quack, quack”
My hen says, “shimmy-shack, shimmy-shack”
My cat says, “Fiddle-i-fee”

Continue verses, adding other farm animals:
My cow says, “moo, moo”
My sheep says, “baa, baa”
My dog says, “bow, wow”
My goose says, “hissy, hissy”
My pig says, “griffy, griffy”

Read those books and earn those badges all week long and I’ll see you next week for a new theme.
